CEC 1970s-B routs ’70s-A
By Rommel C. Manlosa

WHAT was expected to be a tough grind for Shell 1970s-B turned out to be a walk in the park as Batch ’70s-B demolished fellow 1970s team Villa Shipping ‘70s-A, 62-47, to gain a share of the top of the team standings in Division I of Cecaba’s 6th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup Monday evening at the City Sports Club-Cebu Gym.

With Chester Cokaliong getting his usual numbers and the all-out support of point guard Guillermo Tiu, Danny Calagos, Rafael Tan and Joven Cimafranca – Class ’70s-B scored its third straight victory.

Tiu found a place in the Cecaba record books after making 10 steals – aside from scoring nine points, dishing out seven assists and grabbing six rebounds.

Calagos scored eight points on top of 12 rebounds, Tan had seven points and seven rebounds, while Cimafranca hit 5-of-6 from the free-throw line to finish with 11 points that helped Class ’70s-B off to a hot start.

Class ’70s-A had its moment in the driver’s seat after leading, 19-15, before Cokaliong fired off seven points to lead ’70s-B to a pivotal 18-9 spurt to take the lead, 33-28, at the bend.

The Calvin Tuadles-mentored Class ’70s-B erected its biggest lead at 49-30 and Class ’70s-A never got closer than eight points. Class ’70s-A slid to its third straight defeat in as many games.

Asian Home Appliance Center-backed Class ’89, on the other hand, had to go through the proverbial eye of the needle before pulling off a pulsating 78-77 win over the stubborn Tsibogs ’93.

With only 10 seconds left in the game, Christopher Lauron got the chance to tie the game at the free-throw line but sank only the front end of his two foul shots as Oliver Yu grabbed the defensive board and was fouled.

Yu, however, failed to score on his charity shots giving Siegfred Tiu the chance to fire the last shot for Class ’93. But his hurried lay-up failed to find the bottom of the net as time expired. Class ’89 played with only four players on the court in the final seconds of the game.

Class ’70s-B (62) – Cokaliong 16, Cimafranca 11, Tiu 9, Calagos 8, Tan 7, Uy 5, Yap 4, Go 2. Class ‘70s-A (47) – A. Sy 10, Chua Chan 9, Ong 7, Tecson 6, Go 4, Chua 4, Kong 3, Go 2, Tan 2.

Class 1989 (78) – Mendez 30, Yap 16, Gomez 11, Lim 10, Chiang 9, Lao 2. Class 1993 (77) – W. Tan 18, Ng 14, Bejer 12, Ting 11, Tiu 11, Lauron 7, Tan 2, Lopez 2.
