Hilton, Mandaue-TZO triumph By Rommel C. Manlosa
HILTON Motors Corp. applied trapping defense in two quarters then banked on free throws to beat Jeson Guardo, 91-88, even as Mandaue City-TZO came blazing in the final period to beat Lima Speed, 100-91, in Division A of the Guardo Sinulog Cup at the Don Vicente Sotto Gym.
After trailing 22-24 in the opening quarter, Hilton coach Edsel Vallena shifted from a 2-3 zone to trapping defense to dominate the next two quarters following a 31-23 blitz in the second canto.
However, the young Hilton players withered when Rene Toring and Rondyll Roncal made their presence felt for Jeson Guardo before the heart of the ex-CITWildcats-manned Hilton Motors prevailed.
With the score tied at 85-all in the final two minutes, Hilton Motors made a living from the stripe with Jommel Lanutan and Glenn Boncaros earning their points.
Boncaros pulled down two defensive rebounds off split free-throws of Tito Batulan and Lanutan sealed the victory for Hilton Motors.
