Speak out: Correcting inaccuracies By ALVIN B. GARCIA
ALLOW me to put on record a glaring inaccuracy that Tomas Osmeña fed the City Hall beat reporters who published the same without verification. During my incumbency, no City Hall employee ever stayed on in the USA after the expiration of their visa.
As far as I can remember, a reporter from a local daily stayed beyond the period allowed in his visa. This was in the early ‘90s and during the term of Tomas. I also remember a teacher accompanying the USC dance troupe who remained in the USA after her visa expired. She was never connected in any way with the Cebu City Government.
Because of his inadequacy and insecurity, Tomas blames me for all his shortcomings in running the City, even after having been in office for three years. In an Asian Institute of Management survey of livable Philippine cities, Cebu City ranked second for the year 2002, the year immediately after my six-year tenure in office.
Today, for the year 2004, we slid down to fifth position. Tomas attributes the slippage to me long after I have left office and three years into his incumbency. I wonder if he still has believers.
Now that the US consul is pressuring him for the return of a City Hall employee, he brings up an entirely different issue that is patently false, instead of taking full responsibility for his actions.
How pathetic can an insecure person get?
