Toral: Co-opetition By Janette Toral Digital Filipino
NEW GUY. For anyone new in the business today, becoming the company to be recommended is not easy if you don’t have a track record. This is especially true for those who are into information technology (IT) services like Web development and programming, among others.
However, one way to survive is to foster the co-opetition culture and business model. This is according to Cris Gamboa, general manager of IT Group (http://www.itgroup. com.ph).
Recognizing that his company is still small and just starting, Cris networks with established industry players and sees great value in such effort. “This will not only expand our knowledge and business contacts, but (allow us to) meet new friends who share the same passion.”
Cris believes that those who have the passion will last longer in business than those who have money alone, and it is best to work with like-minded entrepreneurs. “You might be skilled, knowledgeable or even a guru, but if you lack passion, the days of your business are already numbered.”
This I have to agree with. Look at the remaining dotcoms in the country. Big players who have the money like PhilBx.com and CateringExchange.com are hardly heard of nowadays while small time but passionate players like B2BpriceNow.com, BestofCebu.com and PinoyDelikasi.com are still going strong.
Rather than treat each other as enemies, providers in the IT sector should come together and share ideas on how to make their companies and the country a leading provider of IT solutions and services.
E-SERVICES PHILIPPINES 2004. My sincerest congratulations to the Department of Trade and Industry-Citem for this successful conference. Cebu-based Primary Software of Mike Jurado won the E-Services Best e-Learning Product Award.
On our end, our E-Commerce Workshop Online bagged the runner-up prize in the same category. Kudos as well to Erick Kalugdan of GiveMeUnlimited who bagged the best mobile product for the second time in this trade fair.
The two-day exhibit and conference was able to attract foreign and local visitors from all over the country looking for partners or solution providers.
MORE ONLINE NETWORKING. If you like networking with people in Friendster.com, Ryze.com, MySpace.com, and LinkedIN.com, then you should check out Philippine-made FunChain.com. This site allows you to create your own personal journal, interact with other people of similar interests, and create numerous communities.
Joining networks like these can be useful if you have a game plan in mind on what you want to get out of it. This objective will serve as a basis in everything that you’ll do in these network communities.
