Officials divided over BP, Friendship merger By Christian Ben Rodriguez
WHILE others expressed reservation, Department of Education (DepEd) 7 Chief Carolino Mordeno said he is in favor of the proposed merger between the Batang Pinoy and Visayas Friendship Games.
Mordeno told Sun.Star Cebu that “the union of both programs will be good considering that it can minimize the cost for all parties concerned.” Aside from unburdening the Local Government Units and the DepEd of huge financial obligations, the planned merger will also maximize the participation of the games.
However, Mordeno added that they will still have to hear the summary of the proposed combination of the two grassroots program before making a final decision as there are other officials are not enthusiastic of the merger.
Among the hitches cited was that the union of both programs might confuse the criteria of participation and that some delegation might use this to put in out-of-school youths in the BP events to their advantage.
But Mordeno clarified that since the matter has not yet been brought up to all the parties concerned, they still have to hear the whole plan of this merger.
Mordeno also said that a tighter screening system and a capable technical committee must be put in place to enforce the rules and regulations of the merger and to avoid cheating.
Other DepEd officials, for their part, said they have yet to hear the grand plan of the unification of the grassroots sports program before they can fully grasp the idea and also make a final assessment.
