Soldiers nab rebel after Bohol encounter
By Garry Cabotaje

THE military arrested suspected rebel as he was reportedly fleeing after a brief firefight in Barangay Sohoton, Calape, Bohol last Thursday night, the Central Command (Centcom) said yesterday.

Maj. Norman Zuniega, Centcom spokesman, identified the captured man as Anton Pesidas aka Duke, who reportedly yielded a .45 pistol with two magazines containing 14 rounds of ammunition and a fragmentation grenade.

The arrest was made after the Army’s 16th Special Forces (SF) Company, led by 2Lt. Marlon T. Salvador, engaged in a firefight with the rebels in Sitio Manga, Barangay Sohoton about 8 p.m., Zuniega said.

He said the Salvador-led SF team was on security patrol in the area after they got reports about the presence of undetermined number of communist rebels.

In a follow-up operation, Zuniega said the military located the alleged New People’s Army (NPA) encampment in Barangay Sampoangan, another mountain barangay in Calape.

The soldiers reportedly found assorted food supplies, improvised tents, jungle hammocks and some subversive documents.

The encounter happened barely a week after Bohol Gov. Erico Aumentado was ambushed by suspected members of the NPA in downtown Tagbilaran City.

Aumentado, his three security escorts and a personal driver were on board a government-issued Mitsubishi Pajero when they were fired upon by armed men. Luckily, they escaped unhurt.

The Tagbilaran City PNP already filed an aggravated attempted murder case against five persons, including NPA Central Visayas spokesman Silvino “Ka Bino” Clamucha, at the city prosecutor’s office.
