Head butt leaves Z with 12 stitches
By Rommel C. Manlosa

WHAT could have been a monumental fight turned out a stalemate for Cebuano fighting sensation Z Gorres.

The venue that brought him to the national limelight saw Gorres unable to completely clear the hurdle in his quest back to glory when his fight against the wily ring veteran Randy Mangubat was declared a technical draw in the second round of a 10-round non-title bout Friday night at the Makati City Coliseum.

The Makati Coliseum was where Gorres toyed with Flash Eraham in April of 2002 that earned him outright appreciation from Manila boxing aficionados. But it was also in this same venue where Gorres’ career hit a snag when he was TKOed by Edgar Rodrigo in June of last year.

The ugly cut on Gorres’ left eyebrow caused by a head butt left a nasty wound that was shut only after 12 stitches.

Gorres dominated the fight in the opening round and in the early second, making Mangubat a human punching bag before the accidental head clash.

It was almost the same scenario when Mangubat defended his WBC International belt against former WBC flyweight champion Malcolm Tuñacao in July 2002 at the Casino Filipino Amphitheater in Parañaque City.

Tuñacao was in total control of the fight from the start until the fight was stopped middle of the fourth round after an accidental head butt left a cut on Tuñacao’s forehead, which needed seven stitches.

“Gorres dominated the contest. Unfortunately the fight was declared a technical draw because of the cut on Gorrres’ left eyebrow,” said ALA Boys chief trainer Edito Villamor.

Gorres now tucks a 15-1-1 win-loss-draw ring record after the fight, while the veteran Mangubat is now 31-19-12. Both fighters scaled up to the 115lb (super-flyweight) division following separate debacles in the 112lb (flyweight).

Gorres moved up after he lost his RP 112lb belt to Rodrigo, while Mangubat decided to scale up after he lost his WBC International belt to Diosdado Gabi last November.
