Summer jobs for students cost Cebu City P12 million

THE Cebu City Government set aside at least P12 million for the salary of students who will work this summer and made sure that payment will not be delayed this time.

Councilor Jocelyn Pesquera said they will only be hiring what the P12,014,190 allocated for the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) can cover.

Last year, the City intended to hire only 2,750 urban poor students but because the number of students hired reached 3,000, their salary was delayed.

“This time, we will make sure that we will only hire what the budget can allow to avoid what happened last year, when their salary was not released on time. Otherwise, the purpose of the program will be defeated,” Pesquera told Sun.Star.

The SPES aims to provide students with an income during summer, which they can use for their enrolment.

During their Feb. 11 regular session, the City Council approved a resolution that will include in the first supplemental budget this year the P12-million allocation for the salary and supplies for SPES.

But since they failed to meet the deadline, Pesque-ra said it will just be included in the second supplemental budget, which will be approved in March.

Summer job

Pesquera said they do not know yet how many students will be hired next month since the Division for the Welfare of the Urban Poor still has to determine who will qualify for the program.

The SPES prioritizes “deserving underprivileged students” between 18 and 24 years old as its beneficiaries.

They must also be residents of Cebu City.

Lawyer Ralph Sevilla, head of the City’s human resource and development office, said that for this year, they will still be hiring around 2,700 students to work in the different departments in City Hall.

Most of the students will be assigned to help in the tax collection, Sevilla said.

He added that since it is an election period, some students might also be assigned to clear the street and public areas of campaign materials.

They will be paid P200 a day for an eight-hour shift. LCR
