Magsaysay: A Bavarian wedding for Lia and Leo
By Jo Magsaysay
Whatever

Absolutely romantic! They were in the same study group of their MBA course in Insaat, Fontainbleau, the site of the palace of the former kings of France. But he was dating another girl and she was going out with another fellow.

Then Lia and Leo met. They talked. They looked at each other’s eyes and knew that they there would never be anyone else but each other for the rest of their lives.

On Saturday, Maria Felicia Cuenco-Reyes Ferraren, daughter of Joji and Chickie of Manila and Cebu, and Andreas Leonhard Reznicek of Chiemgau, Bavaria will pledge their solemn troth to love one another, to have and to hold, to marry for better or for worse, till death do them part.

What more romantic place for a betrothal ceremony than Plantation Bay amid the lagoons afloat with myriad candles lighting up the dark and blossoming flowers scenting the night. A Holy Eucharistic celebration will be offered to bless the betrothed couple, to bless the cord, candle and veil that will become part of the nuptial rites to be held on the 19th of June in the baroque pilgrim’s church, Streichenkirche on a hill overlooking the river Tiroler Ache and lake Chiemsee.

Two sets of invitations printed in English and in German were sent out to close friends and families for two celebrations in Cebu, a despedida de soltera and polterbend tomorrow and the betrothal celebration the following night in Plantation Bay. The other invitation for the wedding ceremony in Bavaria includes a map of Chienegau and details of the route from Gstadt, overnight parking area, a taxi boat ride to Frauneninsel famous for the 1,200-year-old monastery, the Benedictine convent where the liqueurs are distilled from special herbs, a Bavarian lunch at the auberge Berggatshof and dinner reception after the wedding in Zur Linde.

“Prettier…much, much prettier than I ever was,” so Chickie tells me about Lia whom I’ve seen the first and last time as a chubby little tot crawling around the travel offices of her Lola Consuelo Cuenco-Reyes. Chickie of the laughing eyes, sunshine smiles and mellifluent accents was breathless with excitement that everyone in the family is pitching in his utmost to help her and Lia with the preparations, they being based in Manila for all that. Daddy (Rex Reyes) is the pillar of strength, Mommy sensing the excitement around her made motions and selected the gown she wanted to wear…Manny (cousin Manny Gonzales) is an angel, giving so generously of his time and efforts to ensure that the two-day celebrations in Plantation Bay will be perfect…my brothers (Tinoy and Boy) with their wives (Marilou and Beth) are coordinating arrangements for the cake (Marissa Unchuan, of course), the guest list…Leo’s mother (Renate Reznicek) she’s simply wonderful, painted the watercolor landscape of “Frauneninsel” that is reproduced in the invitations for the German event while Joy T. Dayrit who is the baptismal godmother of Lie – she is the niece of Berting and Floring – painted “Bay” that is reproduced on the Philippine invitations…Lia’s gown? She bought it herself in Milan, the cord for the nuptial ceremonies is a long strand of perfectly matched pearls given by her confirmation godmother, Marissa Hipolito, which can be converted into a double stranded necklace with nacre clasps.

Her maid of honor is Aris Go and classmates, some of them anyway, from Montessori and St. Scholastica, will be coming for the betrothal ceremony.

Leo’s best friend Lorenz Prelinger who is also the best man will be here.

Reception will be at Galopagos (which I, idiot that I am improperly tagged Galipoli in my previous column). Anyway, Lia is the only daughter and Leo, the only son who met and fell in love will marry in Chiemagau, Bavaria where they will live happily ever after for “those that God loves, He lets fall into this land.” --- Ludwig Ganghofer
