Serna: Sheryn gets surprise visit by mentor-discoverer

In a way, Cebu city is more privileged than any other place in the country in the sense that it enjoys two successive holidays this week.

First was last Tuesday, which happens to be the city’s Charter Day celebration. The second is, of course, the national holiday in commemoration of Edsa I, which was yesterday.

These two dates have their own respective significance for the city and for the entire country. For the working populace, as well as the students, it was a welcome respite from the usual grind.

Hopefully, the significance of the dates was not lost in how people used or celebrated the holidays.

Last week, actor-performer Diether Ocampo was in town to perform another role, that of a celebrity endorser of Pizza Hut. The pizza brand reopened two of its branches in the city: one in Ayala Center and the other at SM City.

It was obvious that those who attended the affair enjoyed both the delicious pizza and the presence of the celebrity. Diether was candid in his answers during the presscon.

Yours truly overheard some people at the back praising the actor’s presence and his present hairstyle. He looked more handsome than the famous F4 stars. We wondered how the fans of F4 will react to this observation. Agree or disagree.

For the first time, yours truly set foot on Valencia, Negros Oriental, the municipality which helps supply electricity to nearby provinces including Cebu. This was during the three-day annual regional convention of information officers in Central Visayas. It was held in Dumaguete city last week.

The trip to Valencia was one of the scheduled activities where Mayor Rodolfo Gonzales Jr. presented his administration’s socio-economic accomplishments.

Valencia is famous for its cold climate, something that rivals south Cebu’s Mantalongon in the municipality of Dalaguete. These are the two provinces’ “little Baguio.” The mayor gave his presentation at the pavilion inside the scenic and rustic mountain resort, Forest Camp.

The resort is ideal for those who want to escape from the rat race pace of city life. People who need peace and quiet will surely find Forest Camp as the place they are looking for. Try it if you have the time. I don’t think it’s very expensive. Nobody talked about it, so we presumed that the price is just affordable.

There were at least two events that this columnist missed last weekend, partly because of the above-mentioned convention and for some other reasons. The first was Rochelle Vega’s All Out Concert at SM City Theater One.

The other one was the television program hosted by Karen Davila where Sheryn Mae Regis was the featured personality whose wish the program aims to fulfill.

Some friends told me that one of those who surprised Sheryn with his presence is the man that the songbird considers as her mentor and discoverer – the award-winning and sought-after playwright-director Al Evangelio.

Since I missed the episode, I’ll just have to wait for the copy of that particular episode which ABS-CBN reportedly promised to give to Evangelio. By that, I’ll be able to witness the “drama” that transpired between the discoverer-mentor and his protégé.

If you missed that too, then, just wait for my account after I shall have viewed the video, ha, ha! Till then.
