Speeches at grads to keep pols busy
By Gingging A. Campaña

CEBU City elected officials who are seeking another term will not only keep occupied with pulong-pulongs and campaign sorties in the next two months. They will also get busy attending graduation ceremonies.

The various public elementary schools and high schools in Cebu City have scheduled their graduation exercises from March 25 to April 22.

The official campaign period for local and congressional candidates will start on March 25 and will end on May 8.

Last Feb. 20, Cebu City Schools Division Superintendent Leonilo Oliva sent all councilors invitations to the graduation rites of some 82 public schools.

If the politicians can cope with their schedules, they will soon be attending, as special guests or guest speakers, seven graduation ceremonies daily.

From March 25 to April 22, some seven elementary schools and high schools in the south and north district will have their commencement exercises in a day.

According to the schedule sent by Oliva, the programs have been set from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m. to noon, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Opposition councilor Carmelita Piramide confirmed that just like the mayor and the Bando Osmeña-Pundok Kauswagan councilors, she, too, received the invitation.

But she was invited not because she will have the chance to campaign and talk with the parents of the students. “I was invited because I am federation president of the Parents Teachers Community Association,” she told Sun.Star.

All councilors are expected to attend, except for Dana Ruiz-Sesante, Manuel Legaspi and George Rama who are not seeking reelection.
