Speak out: Fighting graft and corruption By Terry Keefe Abellana National School
As an Australian married to a Filipina, I love the Philippines and its people.
I have been following your elections with interest. I realized that even if I am
removed from the politics of the nation, I still am fully aware, based on personal experience, that graft and corruption exists in the Philippines.
But I think progress has been made towards minimizing it, although to expect to banish it completely in a matter of a few years is unrealistic.
I think the law that deters the holding of bank accounts under a fictitious name is good. Also, the lifestyle check should be expanded to cover all government workers.
I have not been to the Philippines since the trial of deposed president Joseph Estrada, but I am amazed that he has not been convicted yet. I think trials in court should be fair but should be resolved quickly. The message should be sent that graft and corruption wilt be dealt with firmly.
My opinions are my own and even if I am not a Filipino, I think President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo should be given a chance to follow up her drive against crime and terrorism.
You have a great country, but criminals who have no regard for anyone, even their own country, are strangling it. The tourist industry is being decimated by these acts of violence.
