Jaz Kings beat Skygo at last in CBF tourney By Rommel C. Manlos Sun.Star Staff Reporter
THE Jaz Cola Kings finally beat tormentors Skygo Motorcycle Riders, 92-88, in fashioning a grueling come-from-behind win to gain a share of the top of the team standings in the 2004 CBF President’s Cup “Kumbati sa Baranggay” at the Pasil Sports Complex Tuesday evening.
Meanwhile, General Feeds Mega Mix made it a three-way tie for the leadership fter denying defending champions Hapee Toothpaste the win with a pulsating 83-81 victory in the opening game.
With their game slowly blending, the Kings completed a fourth-quarter comeback to end the two-game win steak of the erstwhile unbeaten Riders after a closely fought 40-minute game.
“We applied the same game plan and stuck to it religiously. But it was defense that keyed our victory. We clamped down on their big men and we limited the contribution of their shooters,” said Jaz coach Robert Flores.
The Kings trailed all the way from the beginning before the offense of Skygo faltered in the final quarter.
Jaz’s new recruits, led by Marphyl Limbo, were largely responsible for the victory as they poured out their best in the last quarter to withstand the final charge of the Riders.
“I always tell them there is no star in our team,” said Flores. “Everybody is a role player. You play your role well and you will earn more playing minutes. It was also the communication of our players that made us win.”
Former UE Warrior Arnold Booker made a good impression in his debut as he drilled 13 points – mostly in the third quarter to keep the Riders within reach.
Meanwhile, Jett Latonio waxed hot and Christopher Daruca was relentless as the
Feeds Masters withstood the uprising of the Knights.
