Batch ’91 nips Shell 1970s-B
By Rommel C. Manlosa

SHELL ‘70s-B nearly pulled the biggest upset in the tournament but the unforgiving defense of Young Builders ’91 thrown at Chester Cokaliong had the older batch suffering a heartbreaking 65-67 loss Sunday in the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association (Cecaba) 6th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup at the City Sports Club-Cebu.

Class ‘70s had the game under control until the early part of the final period before Class ’91 launched a devastating 13-3 blitz to gain the lead, 60-57, still with four minutes to play.

Counter

The older batch did not stop there as they countered with an 8-3 binge to gain a 65-63 edge in the final 25 seconds of the game.

John Joel Lim pulled the young batch to within 64-65 with split free-throws as Class ‘70s-B missed on its next attempt. Juan Borromeo Jr. sank two pairs of pressure-packed free throws to move Class ’91 66-65 ahead with only 10 seconds to play.

Batch ’70s coach Calvin Tuadles called a timeout to map the last play, which was perfectly executed minus the bucket as slotman Nelson Uy’s attempt from an inbound pass from Rafael Tan rimmed off. Tommy Yu secured his 16th rebound with ninth-tenth of a second left then split his charity for the final count.

Class ’91 took the top spot of Division I with a 6-1 win-loss card.

Cokaliong waxed hot early for Class ‘70s-B, as he drained all of his 18 points in the first half scoring four triples – three of them on a 15-point second quarter – which lifted his Class 70, 33-39 at the bend.

Limited

The limited production of ace point-guard Guillermo Tiu also contributed to Class ‘70s-B’s third defeat in six games.

In the other game, Stephen Tan scored 21 points and Christopher Cokaliong added 10 as Gregoria’s Curtains and Trims Haus ’83 (4-2) roughhoused Asian Home Appliance ’89 (3-3) 59-52, while defending champion Eco-Tech Appliance ’96-A (6-1) drained Rocket Battery ’95, 75-68.

Class 1991 (67) – T. Yu 18, Borromeo 16, C. Go 11, Lim 8, Go 6, Co 6, De la Torre 3, Chua 1. Class ’70s-B (65) – N. Uy 19, Cokaliong 18, Calagos 11, Tan 8, Yap 4, Tiu 3, Cimafranca 2.

Class 1983 (59) – S. Tan 21, Cokaliong 10, Ting 7, Calagos 7, Ku 5, Lim 4, Co 3, Yu 2. Class 1989 (52) – Chiang 17, Mendez 15, Chua 14, Yu 2, Ong 2, Lao 2.
