Delada TKOs Maghuyop in 4th rd. By Rommel C. Manlosa
RP NO.1 super-featherweight contender Dexter Delada scored a fourth- round technical-decision win over veteran Rene Maghuyop in their scheduled 10-round fight Sunday night in Mambajao Town Plaza in Mambajao, Camiguin.
Delada, who only had a week’s notice for the fight, dominated the match, displaying his superior skills and powerful hits on Maghuyop.
However, the fight was stopped at the end of the fourth round after an accidental headbutt, which caused a nasty cut on Maghuyop’s mug midway in the round.
Upon the advice of the ring doctor, the fight was stopped at the end of the fourth round and the judges’ scorecards determined the winner.
All scorecards read 39-36 all in favor of the Camiguin-native Delada, who gained his ninth straight victory undefeated, with six KO wins.
“Dexter lacked preparation because we only had a week’s notice. But still he dominated Maghuyop. And if the fight lasted longer, I believe it could have been a sensational knockout win,” said trainer Brix Flores.
Delada gave Mahuyop a breather before dropping his bombs in a series of barrages in the second and third rounds. But the headbutt prevented Delada from unleashing Mt. Hibok-hibok’s eruption.
The fight ensured Delada, who is preparing for a possible date with RP champion Bobby Pacquiao in June, keeps No.1 ranking in the 130-pound division.
