Ng: E-mail you cannot forward, print

WIRED DESKTOP

OFFICE 2003 LAUNCHED. Microsoft finally launched Office 2003 system to the Cebu public yesterday.

Although MS Office System, generally regarded as the number one productivity tool in the office with generally upwards of 300 million users worldwide, was released late last year, it is only now that many in the public are seeing its new features.

The name “system” was added to emphasize that this version of Office will mean a change in direction.

While previous versions of Office, like Word, Excel and Powerpoint, were geared toward improving individual productivity, this version emphasizes the ability to work together and collaborate. Most of the new features connect users and enable them to work together not only from their desktops, but also from their cell phones, tablets and other pocket devices.

One of the things I like is the ability of the person to specify who can read, or who can edit the documents he has created.

He can also set a valid life span on his Excel or Word document.

Let us say that you email a proposal in Word, or have a price list in Excel, and the price or proposal is valid only for two weeks. If old price lists or proposals have gotten you into misunderstandings before, you can now command your new files to self-destruct or become invalid after two weeks.

The other thing I like is the ability to work on your email so that only the recipient can see it.

Have you heard about people getting into trouble because they sent a confidential email to somebody, and that person forwarded it to some other people?

Isn’t the number one factor for you the risk that the recipient might, knowingly or unknowingly, send your confidential note to other people? What if you send a love note to somebody, and he forwards it to a friend, who forwards it to another?

SELF-DELETING. There is a new feature in the new Office system which allows you more security and better control in sending business information.

You can now control the way the recipient handles your message. For instance, he may only read it, but not cut, copy or paste portions of it, forward it to other people or print it. You may also specify that the email will only be good for a certain period of time, after which it deletes itself.

There are many other features in the system which I will take up some other time!
