BoC aids blind masseurs

The Bureau of Customs (BoC) under district collector Billy Bibit reaffirmed its vow of maintaining its solid partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 7 through its long-term outreach program dubbed “Alay sa Pagmamahal.”

BoC and DSWD’s relationship began in December 2002 when the former launched the program by hosting a Christmas lunch and later on distributed basic commodities for the differently-abled clients of DSWD’s Area Vocational Rehabilitation Center II (AVRC II).

On the same day, Bibit made a commitment to adopt the center as its beneficiary and help get financial resources to augment the center’s needs and that of its clientele. To prove this pledge, he pulled out the center’s only vehicle, which was at the time needing a repair.

Moved by the PWDs’ predicament, Bibit returned in March 2003 bringing with him his
wife, some district collectors of the BoC and staff to celebrate his birthday with DSWD’s clients.

Aside from turning over the key of the center’s newly-repaired vehicle, Bibit also gave the center 10 new electric fans and sports equipment amounting to P14,393. In line with BoC’s earlier commitment, he also made true its earlier promise of installing a therapeutic massage corner inside the BoC Building, which provided a decent livelihood for the blind graduates of AVRC.

It was in November 2003 when the BoC and AVRC carried out this project, which was initially participated in by four blind masseurs. Sixteen days after it was launched, the masseurs accumulated a total income of P6,520. At present, the massage center has not only generated a number of walk-in clients, it also serves as a source of permanent customers for home service.

On Dec. 20, 2003, BoC initiated another gift-giving activity to the PWDs. This time, a new television unit was donated to the center, but Bibit promised a computer unit early next year.
