Mayor okays P11M for tanods
By Rene H. Martel

ABOUT P11.45 million was set aside as the Cebu City Government’s additional subsidy so that the barangay tanods’ honoraria will reach at least P1,200 per month for each of them.

City Councilor Eugenio Faelnar, Association of Barangay Councils president, said the development will boost the tanods’ morale.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña approved the allocation that was included in the first supplemental budget.

Last Jan. 28, the Cebu City Council approved two resolutions that Faelnar authored asking for additional subsidy for the tanods.

At least P9,161,040 was requested for the tanods’ additional honoraria from January to December this year and P2,290,260 for October to December last year.

Faelnar said that more than half of Cebu City’s tanods are not receiving the minimum honorarium that the law set for their services.

One barangay could only afford to give P100 instead of the P1,200, while another gave as much as P3,800 for each of its 20 tanods.

Under the Local Government Code, tanods should have a minimum honorarium of P1,200 a month.

But of the 80 Cebu City barangays, only 32 were able to follow that provision, with Guadalupe giving the highest honorarium of P3,800 followed by Lahug with P3,600 for each of its tanods.

The rest, most especially the mountain barangays, could only give smaller amounts.
Now, the City Government will give P600 more for each of the tanods.
In an interview yesterday, Faelnar said the news will surely encourage the tanods to work hard.

But he added that it is still up to the barangay officials to lead the way and serve as models in keeping their places safe for their constituents.
