Yap: Cursing darkness By Januar E. Yap Meanwhile
There are ways you can air your feelings more strongly in the campaign period:
1. Students, who I believe are against a Poe presidency, can launch a nationwide class boycott or walkout for one day to send a strong statement against the possibility of having Da King as president. All they have to do is pass text messages a week before the schedule.
2. Volunteer groups can compete with politicians in the pulong-pulong in the barangays explaining guidelines in choosing candidates.
3. If you have a talent in graphic arts, you can come up with creative posters and animation clips. All you have to do is post it in the Net or send it to e-mail addresses or newspaper columnists nationwide.
4. Non-government organizations can come up with institutional advertisements on tv.
5. Send letters to the editor signed by your group, with a note saying how many you are and the sector where you belong.
6. Pressure candidates to participate in debates (write letters, call a press conference, send text messages, etc). Tell GMA and FPJ they’re afraid to be on the same stage with Raul Roco. That could challenge the major contenders to finally submit to a debate. The same goes for local candidates. Make sure debates are not only a way to show competence but also to demonstrate sincerity.
7. In your workplace and neighborhood, you can post guidelines in choosing candidates. You only have to spend some P20 to have it photocopied. If there are ten of you doing that, you’ll have enough copies for every room in an entire corporate building. And do that, too, in your neighborhood.
8. If you have a way with language, you can translate sensible newspaper editorials to Cebuano and post them in the Net or go back to idea No. 7. Give it to jeepney and taxi drivers, vendors, etc.
9. Engage your drinking buddies in a debate on politics for a change.
10. Don’t give up.
