CAYAGAN de Oro City – Cebu teams took the top spots in their respective divisions even as host team Del Monte Golf Club took the lead in the premier Championship division after the first day of the 57th Philippine Airlines Men’s Inter-club golf tournament.

Cebu Country Club took the top spot in the leaderboard of the Founders division with 138 points, while another Cebu team, Mactan Coral Golf (MCG), debuted in the Friendship division with a 106 for a 10-point edge over second-placer Zamboanga at the Del Monte fairways in Cawayanon, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon.

Cebu scorers

CCC’s Gene Aznar led his team with a 38. Both Eric Deen and Mark Dy had a 36 each, while Ramonito Garcia had 28 for a 126 total in the Founders division.
Maharlika Golf Club’s 94 put it at second, Cebu’s Alta Vista was at third with 92.
In the Friendship division, the hard-driving Jack Chiu showed the way for MCG with his 29 to earn pole position. Felix Villanueva with 27, Antonio Araneta and Mario
Bancale with similar 25s, added to Chiu’s score for 106.
Meanwhile, home team Del Monte banked on the seven-under-par 65 of caddie Romeo “Boboy” Jaraula to take the lead after the first day with a statement-like 156 in the Championship division at the Del Monte fairways.

Day’s best

The 35-year-old Jaraula used his familiarity of the Del Monte course to notch the day’s best score of 43 points in the PAL modified scoring system of the golfing fiesta sponsored by ABS-CBN Global, Airbus, ASUS Notebook PC, CNN International, GE Aircraft Engines, Golden Nugget Hotel Las Vegas, Johnnie Walker, Manila Broadcasting Corp., Radio Mindanao Network, Royal Caribbean International and UMBN.

The corporate sponsors are 105.1 Crossover, Joey 92.3, PLDT and 96.3 Wrock. The minor sponsors are Asia Brewery, Boeing, Boysen Pacific Paint, Century Park Hotel, INQ7.net, Jam 88.3, Tanduay Rhum and www.phistar.com.

Jaraula recorded nine birdies and two bogeys. Backing him up were Lino Retuerto 40, Joel Opaco 38 and Arsenio Mondilla 35.
Manila Southwoods is second with a just-as remarkable 150.
Still at it

Canlubang Golf and Country Club, going for a fifth consecutive title and 13th overall, settled for a middling 140 for third place.

Southwoods’ second-place finish for the day did not dampen the spirits of Jeric Hechanova. “We played very well today. We had a good start,” he said.
But Canlubang’s Tommy Manotoc, who scored 33 points, was not as optimistic on his team’s chances. “We now have a mountain to climb.”

Boyet Zaragoza was the best performer for Canlubang with 39. Other scorers were Jay Bayron (36), Tommy Manotoc (33) and Joe Mari Hechanova (32).

Toru Nakasima gave Manila Southwoods a 39. Supporting him were Michael Bibat (38), Manson So Jr. (37) and Tonuts Asistio (36).

Meanwhile, at the Pueblo de Oro Golf and County Club in Upper Canitoan, Cagayan de Oro City, Camp John Hay of Baguio accumulated 111 to push itself ahead.

Negros also made 111 points but got a two-point penalty after Max Javelona reviewed his scorecard – a golfing rules violation.

“It’s a great start for us. We’ve been waiting for this kind of start since way back,” Del Monte team captain Ramon Velez relished their performance.
