Chiongbian: My pick is white
By Edgar R. Chiongbian
Tee time

MAN is it hot! Not exactly golf weather you know but at least the sun is out. It makes you wish you were in a different sport like badminton or dancesport. March is always a hot one just like the people born during this month, if you know what I mean.

Another hot one is a survey being done at Cebu Country Club and it has nothing to do with the elections. Prompted maybe by our obsession to surveys, but clearly it shows that Sammy Darza, the CCC general manager, is giving club members an impartial approach to making change.

This is a welcome surprise because it is rarely done in private clubs. Usually they post it on the board and that’s it. Let’s hope this will rub off to the other committees and to other clubs as well.

The CCC survey has to do with replacing the white sand in the bunkers with black sand. The bunkers at holes number five and 11 are already filled with the proposed black sand for the members to try. My personal experience and opinion about white or black sand is very specific because I have played both types on other courses and know how different each one plays.

When I played the bunker at the fifth hole last week, I hurt my left wrist because the sand was so tightly packed and did not budge when I blasted with my lob wedge. Black sand is generally very fine and tends to pack quite easily, and therefore needs raking at least twice a day or soon after a rain.

With proper maintenance, the color of the sand will matter only in preference. But
we must not overlook the aesthetics of the golf course. White sand is definitely nicer to look at in the bunkers. People and/or companies spend tons of money converting our black beaches to white sands and here we go the other way?

My vote is white, what is yours? This is your chance to be heard and no more complaining later. Send in your completed survey and let the majority decide.

ROTALYMPICS. The Rotalympics was, as usual, a big success. RC Banilad Metro was the host club for Sunday’s event and did a superb job getting it done. But like in the past, the Rotary Clubs were left with publicizing their wins in the newspapers. In Tagalog, this is called sariling kayod.

I believe that the host club has the responsibility of compiling the results and submitting it to the newspapers. I’m sure the other clubs were wondering who won what.

Rene Kintanar of mother club RC Cebu questioned why one club claimed they won one sporting event and did not mention RC Cebu as the champion.

RC Cebu, a laidback club in terms of athletics, surprised everyone by winning the
team championships in golf, bowling and dancesport. Joe Suaco and Edward Gaisano bagged the individual trophies in Class B and C golf, respectively. RC Cebu clinched the bowling championship for two years in a row as Orly Israel blazed the lanes.

The flawless dancing of Cely C., whom I paired with, in dancesport gave us the championship in the Latin category. She also finished second to cousin John Melgar and wife Joy in the Standard category.

The scrutinizing eyes of golfers Edwardson and Janette Chiu, George and Jojo Hong, Benji Akol and Danny Flores, with their jaws hitting the floor, made it all worth it.

Highest honors went to RC Cebu Port Center for garnering the most points. RCCPC had the most delegates, best decorated booth and played in all the events. RC Cebu Business District took the second spot, represented by the youngest members of the club in all the events.

GOLF TIP: The best way to swing a bunker shot is to keep your lower body steady. Use your arms and hands to swing the club back, straight up to the halfway point. Swinging straight up means your wrist will cock very early in the takeaway so that at halfway the club will be vertical and pointing to the sky.

From this position it will be easy to hit down sharply, sliding the club into the sand and under the ball. Make sure to accelerate the club through the hitting area and strive for a high finish.
