Cebu teams fizzle
CAGAYAN de Oro City – The Cebu teams failed to live up to their promise, coming up with nothing to show for it in both the Founders and Friendship divisions where they hovered near the top of the standings in the first three days of competition.
It was actually both a home win in the Founders division and Championship division (see separate story). Home team Pueblo de Oro saved its best for last on the last day by gaining its personal best score of the competition with 133 for a total of 509 after adding its previous scores of 124, 128 and 124 at the Pueblo de Oro Golf and County Club in Upper Canitoan, Cagayan de Oro City.
Cebu Country Club had its second-best scoring day of the tournament with 123 after its initial 128 but fell out of the winners’ bracket. With its second and third day scores of 118 and 109, CCC could only muster a 478 tally, way below the 509 of Pueblo de Oro. The Cagayan de Oro team amassed its score with 124, 128, 124 and 133.
Friendship division
At second spot was Forest Hills with 486 on a 122, 124, 120 and 120. Third place went to Riviera and Wack Wack, which both grossed 485. Riviera earned 116, 122, 122 and 125. Wack Wack’s scores were 122, 130, 114 and 119.
The Friendship division was also a bitter disappointment for Alta Vista as it tied Philippine Navy on the third day only to slide to far fourth with 372 on the final day. Navy had 389.
Alta Vista’s complete scores are 92, 92, 99 and 89. Navy’s are 86, 88, 109 and 106.
Second-placer Pittsburg had 382 (83, 80, 113 and 106). At third, Lumbia Golf and Country Club’s 380 it merited on its 85, 95, 87 and 113.
Mactan Coral Group seemed on the right path for a spectacular finish with its first-day leading 106. But it was downhill the rest of the way. All it could manage from thereon were middling 81, 89 and 91.
Club Filipino did worst among Cebu clubs. It ended up near the tail-end at 14 with a 287 (59, 80, 74, 74) in the golfing competition sponsored by ABS-CBN Global, Airbus, RJ 100 FM, CNN International, GE Aircraft Engines, Golden Nugget Hotel Las Vegas, Johnnie Walker, Manila Broadcasting Corp., Radio Mindanao Network, Royal Caribbean International and UMBN. The corporate sponsors are 105.1 Crossover, Joey 92.3, PLDT and 96.3 Wrock. The minor sponsors are Asia Brewery, Boeing, Boysen Pacific Paint, Century Park Hotel, INQ7.net, Jam 88.3, Tanduay Rhum and www.philstar.com.
