Chiongbian: Of men, boys and ballroom
By Edgar R. Chiongbian
Tee time

IS the Pal Interclub golf tournament getting too competitive? I think so and that is what makes it good. Besides the tournament is divided into four divisions so the top amateurs can compete head-on in the Championship and Founders division, separating the men from the boys.

And the boys (the real amateurs) continue having fun in the Sportswriters and the Friendship division. However, I’m not sure it will stay that way for long because many teams are now recruiting players to give them better chances of winning.

For those unfamiliar with the tournament, Pal Interclub brackets the teams into their respective divisions based on the total handicaps of the players. To maintain integrity of the tournament, Pal Interclub maintains a file of handicaps from players that have played in the tournament for evaluating team rankings. So handicaps will not change because you said so.

What I believe is missing in these tournaments are the galleries or spectators. I am sure if the Interclub organization arranged for it, people will flock to watch the competition. At the very least, they should have television or video crews to record it for us to see and enjoy later via CD or television special. After all this is the premiere amateur competition of our country.

This month there will be elections of officers in some of our private clubs in Cebu and one in particular should be worth watching for. You are right; it’s the one with a multi-million-peso clubhouse under construction. Okay now, voting members do your thing and remember to vote for the guys that can run the club, not the ones that look like they can.

Also this month the Federation of Senior Golfers will be teeing off at CCC. So seniors limber up your legs and build some stamina to walk the golf course on Monday the 15th of March. There is no walking fee but you must finish the 18 holes before it gets dark. Heehee.

Hey sport do you want to dance? If you do, don’t look too far, our Team Cebu City is one of the best dancesport teams in the country. That’s because Eleanor and Ed Hayco will not stop at nothing but the best. Since there is a National Dancesport competition in Manila on March 20, they brought Richard Morrissey to Cebu from Australia to train our athletes.

Richard is an Australian Ballroom Champion and considered one of the best in world rankings during his career. He is now retired from competition and has devoted his time as a coach, trainer and adjudicator for international dancesport events.

In case you want to see how good our guys are, go to the Teatro Casino, Waterfront Lahug on March 13 and watch Team Cebu’s preview show for the competition in Manila. One hundred pesos will get you through the door with reserve seats a little higher. All proceeds will go to the team’s expenses for the trip to Manila.

Our personality golfer today is Jun (Segundo) Selma. He is my idol for many reasons. He is very friendly, good-looking, macho muscles, long hair, dare to wear tie-dyed shirts and an entrepreneur. He is God fearing (my church-mate) and will not hurt a fly.

His daughter gets married in the midst of a garden in full bloom. But his golf handicap is 99, which I refuse to believe until he explained that it means short of 100%. You know like a person who is 99 (crazy), so is his game!

GOLF TIP: The three components for controlled and repeatable golf swing are balance, rhythm and timing. In order to stay balanced during your swing you must start in balance.
What happens in the swing is largely a reflection of what is created at address.

To enhance your rhythm and timing you should start the takeaway with a swing (with the arms) rather than with a body turn. Swinging doesn’t create tension, whereas turning does. That is why great golfers always begin their motion by swinging the club back rather than by turning the body.
