Pals, Gins remain unscathed
By Jade S. Violeta with Patrick C. Costelo

Games today:
4 p.m. – Purefoods vs. Alaska
6:15 p.m. – Sta. Lucia vs. Coke

TALK ‘N Text secured the temporary lead in the PBA-Gran Matador Fiesta Conference after halting the Fedex Express, 116-104, at the Philsports Arena.

In the main game, Danny Ildefonso led the San Miguel with 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists as they wore out Ginebra in the fourth quarter, 95-82.

The Phone Pals’ victory is their third straight in the conference following wins over Shell and Red Bull while the Express fell to a 0-2 start.

The Express’ Ranidel de Ocampo scored 19 markers to overshadow his older brother, Talk N’ Text’s Yancy, but Fedex found no answer to the gargantuan puzzle called Asi Taulava, who made mincemeat of the Express’ defense.

Taulava scattered 25 baskets, pulled down 15 boards and issued two assists to lead the Phone pals to victory and take home the Best Player of the Game award.

FedEx kept the game close in the first two quarters as they limited the Phone Pals’ lead to just four, 53-57, at the bend and even slashed it further to 66-69 inside the 4:45 mark of the third canto before the Phone Pals streaked to 87-80 entering the final period.

Sensing the growing weakness on the Express’ defense, the Phone pals attacked with Taulava wreaking havoc inside the paint.

De Ocampo added 10 points for the Phone pals while FedEx import Alvin Jefferson, the 6-foot-8 muscleman who drew a lot of attention during the preseason when he broke a backboard in an exhibition match with Alaska, finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
