Serna: Escape from reality with Otso Otso By Roger Serna Sounds & Images
In some cases, a hit song can make a hit movie or it could be the other way around. What more if two hit songs are made as integral part of a movie? Add to this the presence of the most visible faces in tinseltown and you’re assured of box-office returns.
This is the case of the movie Otso Otso Pamela-Mela-Wan! which opened yesterday for Cebu moviegoers to enjoy. In this high technology environment we are in, movie watching is still among the cheapest form of entertainment. And, during these times when the electorate is still undecided (well, at least for some voters) on whom to support in the coming elections, and is bombarded with an avalanche of issues from all the candidates’ camps, it is worthwhile to relax and escape from reality for a while.
Otso Otso Pamela-Mela-Wan! could be the right vehicle for this purpose. The hilarious movie is top-billed by today’s hottest rib-ticklers, Bayani Agbayani and Vhong Navarro, with able support from Cherry Lou, Angeline Aguilar, Michelle Bayle, Denise Joaquin, Pinky Marquez, Karl Marquez, Robin da Roza, Jaboom Twins, Roco Twins, Dexter Doria and Tessie Tomas.
Some of these stars visited Cebu over the weekend to promote the movie. Josie Pereyra took charge of the Vis-Min promotion. Jerry Lopez-Sineneng is at the helm.

The municipality of Madridejos, the third of the three towns of Bantayan island, aggressively bats for media’s and tourists’ attention through a re-enactment of the most famous and oft-told story on earth: the last days of Christ and His crucifixion.
Settling for no less than the most awarded Cebuano artist, Alvan Claude Evangelio, to orchestrate the undertaking, Mayor Mancio is leaving no stone unturned to make the religious exercise a most sublime experience that would firm up the viewers’ spiritual “bonding”.
The town mayor humbly admits that of the three towns in the island, it is Madridejos that is the least popular among tourists who visit the island during summer and most specifically the Holy Week.
Sta. Fe is famous for its powdery white beaches, while Bantayan attracts visitors with its grandiose procession of life-size icons and images in recount of the Lord’s passion, death and resurrection.
The live dramatization is Madridejos’ attempt to have a little slice of the limelight. There was a trial balloon last year and the theatrical presentation succeeded in attracting many people such that a giant screen had to be mounted outside the venue to give those who could no longer be accommodated the chance to view the spectacle. This year, the people behind the presentation, led by the mayor herself, have fortified efforts to make the event bigger and better.
Besides, the goal of a tourism come-on is the underlying thrust in developing local talents most specifically the youth and to enhance the spiritual needs of the constituents, according to Mayor Mancio.
Playdates are April 7, Holy Thursday, at 7:30 p.m. and April 8, Good Friday, at 12 noon, and it will proceed to the stations of the cross in the main streets of the town and end with the crucifixion and seven last words at the town square.
