Speak out: Mayor, masiao, etc. By Alvin B. Garcia
Mayor Tomas Osmeña was just trying to cover up his ties with a Cebu-based masiao lord when he said I have links with video carrera operators along with Cebu City Police Office Chief Cecil Ezra Sandalo.
Have you ever heard of the mayor campaigning against masiao since he took the seat at City Hall? Never.
In a radio interview yesterday morning, the mayor, when told of a radio station still airing jai-alai games and masiao results at midnight, was somewhat irked by the information relayed to him by the anchorman, feigning ignorance about it.
Was he irked that this jai-alai airtime is still going on? We don’t think so. Maybe he was irked that the anchorman mentioned masiao when he was not supposed to.
The mayor also said he now relies more on the media and not the police. What can you say of a mayor who doesn't trust his own police force?
We also think the mayor is condoning drug abuse in his proposal to allow students, or teenagers in general, to taste marijuana in a bid to curb the drug problem in schools.
We think the mayor is out of his league! Solving a problem with another possible problem is not the answer here. This is not the way to address the curiosity of the youth!
The mayor compared the kid's exposure to drugs to sex education. Sex education is required to prepare the youth to become responsible adults and future parents, but exposing them unnecessarily to illegal drugs and other substances will destroy their lives.
Is he trying to legalize drugs just like what he's trying to do with masiao and tigbakay? Is he trying to condition the minds of the people preparatory to their acceptance of the kind of businesses that his supporters and financiers are actively involved in?
Some of the mayor's staunch supporters, as far as we can remember, are included in Rep. Tony Cuenco's drugs watchlist. Some of them have also been elected barangay officials.
