Mayol KOs Indon opponent By Rrommel C. Manlosa Sun.Star Staff Reporter
ORIENTAL and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) minimum-weight champion Rodel Mayol reasserted his class among Asian fighters as he delivered a telling blow to body that ended any hope of Indonesian sensation Ewan Key to score an upset against the Stonewall Boxing Club’s ace fighter.
Mayol, also known as the “Magnum Force,” terrorized Key with a relentless combination of punches en route to a sixth-round knockout Tuesday night at the RCTI Studio in Jakarta, Indonesia.
However, stablemate and Pan-Asia Boxing Association junior flyweight champion Marvin “The Kid” Tampus was frustrated after his fight with Anis Ceufin was declared a technical draw after the Indonesian suffered a cut on the eye after a headbutt.
The 19-yeard-old power puncher was on the verge of scoring another knockout when Ceufin decided to hold after receiving heavy blows from the Liloan, Cebu-based fighter.
“Marvin was a little frustrated because he knew he was one more blow away from scoring a knockout,” said Stonewall Boxing Club manager Joy Ouano. “Rodel said Marvin’s opponent could not have lasted more than 20 seconds more and they suspect that the cut was caused by a legal blow.
“But it was ruled a headbutt – that caused the frustration of Marvin, who thought he had the Indonesian already.”
The head and body attacks of Tampus proved too much for the heavier Ceufin as the Bato, Leyte-native came out hungry for another victory since scoring an eighth-round KO against Kaicheon Sor Vorapin last Sept. 6 in Ormoc City.
The draw held Tampus’ record to 11-1-1 win-loss-draw with eight wins by KO.
“Aseng was very mad on why the fight was stopped and he promised to ask for a rematch with Marvin’s opponent,” said Ouano, referring to the Indonesian promoter who invited the Filipino boxers to fight against the best fighters of Indonesia.
Tampus has been booked to defend his Paba belt against No.3 contender Vicky Tahumil on April 13 also in Jakarta.
Mayol’s victory, on the other hand, kept him undefeated after 16 fights with 13 wins by knockout. The Mandaue fighter will fight on April 6 against the more impressive Ambrinset Matta also for 10 rounds.
