Comelec names candidates without drug test By KAREN M. FLORES Sun.Star Staff Reporter
AS AN example to other candidates, particularly those seeking local positions this year, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has produced a list of candidates who have not complied with the requirement for mandatory drug testing.
A minute resolution from the Comelec en banc said one candidate for vice president and 15 senatorial hopefuls, including some Cebuanos, are among those who have not submitted drug test results.
Among those included in the list are reelectionist Sens. John “Sonny” Os-meña and Aquilino Pi-mentel Jr., former Manila mayor Alfredo Lim, actress Pilar Pilapil and former San Juan mayor Jinggoy Estrada.
Publication of list
The Comelec en banc said it is “noting” the list and directed the Comelec education and information department to cause the publication of the list in two newspapers of national circulation.
The deadline for national candidates to submit drug test results was last Feb. 8.
For those seeking local positions this May 10, the deadline has been set for March 24. So far, only 20 of the 58 candidates for Capitol seats have complied with this.
Section 5 of Comelec Resolution 6486 provides, “No person elected to any public office shall enter upon the duties of his office until he has undergone mandatory drug test and filed...the drug test certificate required.”
Non-compliant
Among those who have not submitted test results in Cebu are gubernatorial candidates Celestino “Junie” Martinez Jr., Wil-fredo Tuadles of the KMP, and Jose Mari Osmeña; vice gubernatorial hopefuls Adelino Sitoy and Fer-nando Celeste; and congressional candidates Eduardo Gullas, Clavel Asas-Martinez and Joy Ouano.
Earlier, Comelec’s provincial office in Cebu reminded candidates of their March 24 deadline.
By March 25, the start of the campaign period for those running for local positions, election officers need to submit to Comelec-Manila their lists of those who have complied with the requirement and those who have not.
