Only MCIAA board can kick me out: Verdan
By ALLAN I. VARQUEZ

THE acting general manager of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) took a hard stand against the Civil Service Commission (CSC), which, for the third time, declared him unqualified for the post.

Angelo Verdan said the MCIAA board of directors, not the CSC, is the one that can kick him out.

“By function lang gud ning ako ug kon unsay gusto sa board maoy akong tumanon. If the board is not happy with my performance, then the board can remove me from office,” Verdan said in a mobile phone interview.

No copy yet

Verdan said he and the MCIAA board of directors have learned of the CSC decision Wednesday yet. But as of last night, they have not yet received a copy of the decision, which will be made basis in filing a motion for reconsideration before the Court of Appeals.

Citing Republic Act 6958, which created the MCIAA, Verdan said only the airport’s Board of Directors can strip him of his function as general manager, being the concurring authority of whoever the President of the Philippines will endorse for the post.

Verdan assumed the post in October 2001 despite the CSC opposition over his lack of the needed career executive service eligibility.

President Arroyo endorsed him to remain in the post in November 2003, which the MCIAA approved despite another opposition from the CSC.

He said he will not take the initiative to contest the CSC ruling because he is not a party
to the case.

“From the very beginning wala ko mosulay ug influence sa desisyon sa board aron mosuporta sila ngari nako, much more in this third time. I am not a party to this case and it is up to the board whether they will contest the third CSC ruling,” he said.
