NEOPHYTES. Some of the cast members in this year’s Kadaugan sa Maktan stage play are neophytes in the field of acting but with director Benjie Diola, the first-timers are showing signs of becoming potential professional stage performers. While it’s true that some of them have been singing professionally, it doesn’t follow that they are also experienced stage actors.

Their participation in Kadaugan sa Maktan actually gives them the rare opportunity to learn the rudiments of world-class stage acting from a topnotch director like Benjie. He really brings out the best in each of the cast members.

SINGERS. Bobsteel Bacalso is one of them. In the musicale, he plays Sawili, son of Lapu-Lapu, the Mactan chieftain. In 1990, Bacalso won the best interpreter award during the 9th Cebu Popular Music Festival at the Cebu Coliseum. In 1992, he was a grand finalist in Tanghalan ng Kampiyon and in 2002, he was the grand champion in singing competitions held by dyLA and dyHP. Another cast member is Mario Jadraque who plays Father Valderrama in the musicale. His first major victory as a singer was in 1962 when he became the quarterly finals champion in ABS-CBN’s Entablado Tres. Jadraque was also the undefeated singing champion in Huni sang Kalipay in Bacolod city for 10 consecutive weeks in 1970. As a professional recording star, he was the lead voice of Filipinas Singers under Vicor Music from 1972 to 1976.

As a composer, Jadraque wrote some songs interpreted by Pilita Corrales, Linda Magno, Imelda Papin, El Masculino, Rosalie Robles, Romeo Miranda and Victor Wood. Kadaugan sa Maktan also has in its cast Bong Cabrera and Chiqui Cartagena. Cabrera has been involved in numerous stage productions as an actor, segment producer, storyteller or production manager and director. Cartagena has been directed by Bart Guingona, Anton Juan, Ricky Abad, Delia Villacastin and Allan Jayme Rabaya and has appeared in productions such as The Lute Song, Les Miserables and New Yorker in Tondo.

By the way, Chet Beltran-Ortiz and Rajee Palanca are the musicale’s production assistant and production coordinator, respectively. Kadaugan sa Maktan starts its three-night run on April 16 at SM City Cinema One.

Producing it is the Lapu-Lapu City Government through its Tourism, Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission led by First Lady Paz Radaza and Councilor Damian Gomez.

CONCERT. A retired doctor from Cebu is staging A Tribute to Elvis Presley Part II on April 24 at the Lapu-Lapu city stage near the Mactan shrine. Bernard Pino, the Elvis Presley of Michigan, will be singing purely Presley hits with live musical accompaniment by the Doy Montana Band. Yes, he will be in an authentic Presley getup plus the trademark sideburns, not to mention the famous gestures and mannerisms onstage. The upcoming show is one of the activities lined up to mark Kadaugan sa Maktan as a week-long observance in Lapu-Lapu city. Pino is in town for his annual vacation as well as look into the possibility of establishing a business entity in one of the malls in Cebu city.

MANAGER. This broadcaster’s days are numbered as a station manager. The network’s Manila bigwigs are seriously considering a petition signed by the guy’s subordinates seeking for his relief.
