Micame: Another controversy links John-john By Rel P. Micame
REACTION. This corner continued to receive reactions to an item in this column Friday last week about taxi drivers. The email that I got from Pat Sansorjo, from Houston, Texas, SA., the sender has nice words for the taxi drivers in Cebu. In his email, Sanjorjo said that after his retirement in 1992, he visited Cebu City more often. And, every time he takes a vacation here, he always takes a taxi.
“And, I had no problem with the drivers. As a matter of fact I pity them. For a change of less than P20, I just gave it to the driver,” he said.
But he warned me with this parting words: “Please try to avoid an FPJ victory. In Houston, we are for GMA, in spirit only.”
However, the email I got from Ben Cis was different. “The issue about abusive taxi drivers is an old problem. The pakyaw system has to be stopped,” he said.
ANOTHER SCANDAL. First, it was the Perdido Lex scandal in which the Cebu Capitol was duped of P5 million. The next transaction is the 1.7-ton shipment of a shabu ingredient worth P3.65 billion. In both of these transactions, two staff members of Vice Gov. John-John Osmeña were reportedly involved.
In the Perdido Lex case, a Wilfredo “Willy” Mulla, executive assistant of Vice Gov. Osmeña, allegedly accompanied Perdido Lex president Milagros Herrera in collecting P5 million from the Capitol treasury.
In the shabu ingredient importation, the aide of the vice-governor is reportedly involved. A certification issued by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) attested that the importer of shabu ingredient is Coastside Ventures, Inc. and named one Joebert Cuesta as the company president. Cuesta, an employee in the Office of Vice Gov. Osmena, accompanied Willy Mulla to Barili to present Perdido Lex ‘s “Touch Young Minds” project to the Municipal Council.
Gov. Pablo Garcia, apprised of the shabu ingredient importation, believed that lawyer Panelo’s claim that a Mike Cummngs is the importer is only a diversionary tactic to mislead investigators.
On the other hand, Sen. John H. Osmeña, John-john’s father, is apprehensive that his son’s possible involvement in the two controversies will affect his reelection bid. The Cebuano senator wants the investigations terminated.
BAGACAY LIGHTHOUSE. How many square meters of land are left with the government on which the Bagacay lighthouse in Barangay Catarman, Liloan, stands? I am asking this question because I knew of an enterprising individual who succeeded in claiming ownership and possession of a sizable portion of the beach lot adjacent to the lighthouse. This particular individual made millions from the sale of the lot to a Filipino-Chinese businessman of Cebu City. It took months for this enterprising businesswoman to get a waiver signed by an official of the military establishment.
I have no idea whether the Filipino-Chinese buyer has already secured the title for the lot he bought adjacent to the lighthouse.
TOO EXPENSIVE. A close friend from Punta Princesa, Cebu City, called me up the other day to inform me the he has changed his telephone with Globelines. “I can no longer afford the monthly for my PLDT phone,” he said.
After jotting down his new Globelines phone number, I said, “Why did it take you so long to realize the burden? I have given up mine a long time ago.
And, I have been enjoying the big difference. I am only paying now a monthly rental of only P560, compared with PLDT’s almost P700 monthly.
For my domestic long distance calls, I am only paying P4.50 per minute, instead of P12.50 per minute at PLDT. I am now relieved of the almost P150 monthly for the locking service system PLDT used to charge me. At Globelines, it’s free.”
SCRIPTURE READING. Suggested reading of the Holy Bible for today is found in the Gospel according to St. John 5:19-29 “The authority of the son,” and for March 25—St. Luke 1:26-38 “The birth of Jesus is announced.”
