Speak out: New assessment modes By Guido T. Balansag Principal I, IBSC II-Bogo, Cebu
In June 2002, the Department of Education launched the nationwide the Basic Education Curriculum to develop in the pupils functional literacy and improve the quality of learning.
The restructured curriculum provides for non-traditional approaches to teaching aimed at raising pupils’ achievement.
These include interactive and integrative learning, values development in all learning areas, use of information and communication technology and other media, provision of opportunities for outdoor learning, localization of the curriculum and emphasis on the development of higher order thinking skills.
Even the way pupils’ progress is monitored and evaluated has been restructured as to include the use of authentic assessment measures.
With the new curriculum, samples of non-traditional assessment modes were introduced which include rubrics (matrices that define what is expected in learning situation), portfolio (work samples of pupils), exhibits and open–ended response exercises (questions that requires to construct responses).
DepEd officials are hopeful that with the introduction of non-traditional assessment modes, it will truly be reflective of what and how much pupils have learned and thus motivate them to improve themselves.
