Aboitiz group of companies ‘always hiring’: official
THE Aboitiz group of companies staged its first-ever Aboitiz Job Convention yesterday at SM City Cebu in a bid to attract the best graduating students and talents in the region to join the organization.
Txabi Aboitiz, vice president, quality and people development of Aboitiz & Co. Inc., said the convention was staged because “we want people to know that we are still hiring.”
“We are always hiring,” he told Sun.Star. “We are always on the lookout for people with the right attitude, frame of mind and willingness to explore a company that is not traditional.”
He said the public normally associated the Aboitiz group with just its shipping firm WG&A, now Aboitiz Transport System Corp., when in fact, the conglomerate has interests in power, banking, food, transport and land, not to mention construction and ship building, which also need to be staffed.
“People don’t really know us. We’re not top of mind. They don’t see us as a big group,” he said.
Aboitiz said the conglomerate was hiring partly because it was losing some people, like engineers, to jobs overseas, and also because “we’re expanding into new services.”
He said two new roro (roll on-roll off) ships, which carry both passengers and cargo, were set to go into operation by April.
Both were bought from Japan and refurbished at the Cebu Shipyard. These are the new-generation ships, the Superferry 17 and 18.
Last year, the group brought in Superferry 15 and 16.
The Aboitiz group may also hold job conventions in other parts of the country depending on the success of this first effort, he said. CTL
