Cebu rules all but 2 By KARLA I. PANER Sun.Star Correspondent
CEBU-PRISAA bagged almost all the gold medals in all the events of the Central Visayas Regional Collegiate Athletic Association (Cvircaa) as the Cebu bets make up the bulk of the Central Visayas delegation to the Ched-Palaro on April 23-25 in Bacolod City.
In Men’s volleyball, Dave Areza smashed 12 kills as Cebu trounced NegOr-Prisaa, winning the last three sets after NegOr-Prisaa took the first set, 33-31.
NegOr-Prisaa’s women’s team from Foundation University then avenged their men’s defeat when they took out Cebu-Prisaa in three straight sets, 25-20, 25-22, 25-20, to win the crown, which was one of only two team events missed by Cebu.
Right after the last game, tournament manager Raffy Briones gave special individual awards to commence the meet.
MVP award for Men’s went to UC’s Rey Maresa with 56 statistical points, while Foundation University’s Miolle Gabaligno took the award in the Women’s division.
Best Libero went to Rey Paras of Cebu and Emmylou Tanura of Negros, while Alexis Seccion and Leah Cabajar were both awarded Best Servers.
NegOR-Prisaa’s high-leaping Reynald Catipay and Meycel Teves were Best Spikers, while the Best Setter and Best Blocker were sisters Noele Gabaligno and Miolle Gabaligno of Foundation University.
Rustom Suan of Negros was Best Setter for Men’s and USJ-R’s Michale Simbajon secured the Best Blocker after logging in 13 good blocks in the tournament.
Briones had wanted Kent Bulabon and Reynald Catipay of NegOr to reinforce the Region 7 Men’s volleyball team, but the two will be representing their school in the Nestea National Beach Volley University Championships in Boracay, which happens on the same date as the Ched-Palaro.
Meanwhile, coach Enriqueta Aday of Foundation University might be picking some players from Cebu for the national meet.
The other events that Cebu-Prisaa will represent in the Ched-Palaro are badminton, table tennis, chess, lawn tennis, football, baseball, softball, swimming, taekwondo, dancesport and track and field, where they took all the gold.
In the awarding ceremonies at the USC Gym, the Cvircaa flag was turned over to the 2005 host, Negros Oriental.
