Bible Baptist Church celebrates 47 years
Bible Baptist Church will mark its 47th year of ministry in Cebu city with a grand church anniversary celebration on March 28 at 9 a.m.
Highlighting this year’s anniversary is special guest speaker Dr. Steve Jarrett of the Rock of Ages Ministry based in Tennessee, USA. Over 9,000 members and guests are expected to join in thanking God for all the years He has blessed the Church.
The ministry of Bible Baptist Church began in 1957 through the late American missionary Rev. Bob Hughes. The first worship service was held on the last Sunday of March 1957 in a small apartment space situated on Jones ave. with 14 people present. Before long, church attendance increased and the services were held in a larger house on Mango ave. The growing congregation required another transfer and this time the Church rented a two-story floor building on España st.
In 1964, Hughes led the Church to purchase an 800-square-meter property on Tres de Abril st. where a two-story concrete building was constructed. For nine years, Bible Baptist Church was to hold services there. In those years, attendance steadily increased to 600 every Sunday and every available space in the building was occupied by people. The present property on Katipunan st. was then purchased, and in 1972, the new 3,000- seat auditorium was dedicated.
Various ministries
In 1975, Hughes succumbed to cancer. Through the current leadership of Dr. Armie F. Jesalva, Bible Baptist Church continues to experience increasing growth through its various ministries.
A children’s extension ministry provides a way to reach hundreds of children each week. It has a Youth Ministry that ministers to over 450 young people. A Career Ministry composed of young professionals regularly organizes free clinics and feeding programs all over the city and neighboring provinces. Similar opportunities for ministry involvement are accorded married couples.
Bible Baptist also has 27 satellite churches around Metro Cebu that ministers to 1,500 people each Sunday. Through two educational arms, Bible Baptist Church trains men and women for leadership and excellence: Bob Hughes Christian Academy, and Bible Baptist College for the training of workers for the Gospel ministry.
