Costanilla: Cebu Pop accepting entries until July 31 By Sam Costanilla Spotlight
CHANGES. A lot of changes are expected to make next year’s silver anniversary of the Cebu Popular Music Festival a grand competition of original Cebuano compositions. Project director Philogene Florita says the Cebu Arts Foundation, Inc. is now accepting entries to the songwriting contest and the deadline is July 31 this year. Entry forms are now available at the high school department of the University of the Visayas. According to Florita, all submitted entries will be screened on August 8 and the compact disc recording of the top 12 compositions starts on August 12 at the Soundtraxx Production Studio. It is in this context that Florita is reminding all composers to start submitting their entries to the 2005 popular music fest and not wait for the July 31 deadline. As soon as the magic 12 is announced, weekend
practices at the University of the Visayas gym will commence right away.
Next year’s silver presentation of the music fest will be on January 14 at Waterfront Hotel in Lahug this city.

PASSION. Topnotch stage director Orlando Magno and scriptwriter/set designer Rudy Aviles are cooking up something spectacular for the Holy Week. They are making sure that this year’s Buhing Kalbaryo on April 9 is an authentic (or closer to it) presentation of Jesus Christ’s passion, a story about Him as a human being. Buhing Kalbaryo, now on its seventh year, is another major cultural-religious project of the Cebu City Government. For this year’s passion play, Neil Echavez and Werner Lorenzo are alternately playing Jesus Christ while Candle Rosalejos is Mary and Joey Gallardo and Jeffrey Dave will play Pontius Pilate and Judas Escariot, respectively. Over 200 other youth from barangays Guadalupe, Calamba and San Nicolas are also members of the cast.

ACTOR. Fellow journalist Vince Escario is playing Portuguese explorer Fernando Magallanes in this year’s Kadaugan sa Maktan to be staged for three nights starting April 16 at SM City Cinema One. This year’s musicale is under the direction of Benjie Diola. Throughout the play, Vince will be speaking – and singing! – the language of Cervantes. He says getting into Magellan’s character has made him look at our history with a greater understanding of Spain’s conquest of the Philippines. Vince is no stranger to the performing arts, being an actor in several past musicales in town. (For reactions/feedback, call or text 0916-3483333).
