Campaign materials replace ads on poles along UN Ave.

THE flagpoles on the center island of United Nations Ave. in Mandaue City have been cleared of advertisements, only to be replaced with campaign posters.

Early this month, City Councilor Carlo Pontico Fortuna called for the removal of the advertisements, but when sought for comment yesterday afternoon, he said it would be the call of the Commission on Elections whether the posters should be removed.

Election fever

“It’s election fever. Most candidates are just maximizing space,” he said.
Fortuna, who is seeking a third term under the administration party, said he is not surprised to see the posters taking up the space on United Nations Ave.

He said that considering it is the campaign period, posters will be put up in any available space.

Fortuna authored a resolution ordering the removal of all the banners and flags displayed along the stretch leading to the Marcelo Fernan Bridge.

Review

The resolution also directed the City Admi-nistrator’s Office to review the contract between the City and Markjeem Steel Services Corp. to “determine whether or not there are grounds to rescind the contract.”

Markjeem and the City have an agreement for the company to display flags of the members of the United Nations, as well as corporate flags of companies based in Mandaue City.

However, the flags of different countries were already tattered and the road was filled with billboards and streamers “that are not supposed to be there.” AAG
