Twins’ condition stable; Manzos eating normally
A WEEK after their successful operation, former conjoined twins Princess Ann and Princess May Manzo remain in stable condition and have resumed feeding by mouth.
Chief surgeon Ab-dullah Al Rabeeah said that due to the twins’ stability, central venous lines, arterial catheters and antibiotics have been stopped.
He added that the twins are expected to leave the pediatric intensive care unit in a few days.
Princess Ann and Princess May will undergo rehabilitation and physical therapy for about eight weeks before they could return home to the Philippines.
Progress report
A progress report on the twins posted on the website of the National Guard Health Affairs said that the two “have woken up completely and gained normal activity.”
The twins smile as they interact with their mother, Carina, and the medical staff, the report added.
Princess Ann and Princess May have been brought close together to minimize separation trau-ma and reduce anxiety.
Born on Nov. 12, 2003, the twins were joined in their lower abdomen and pelvis.
Crown Prince Ab-dullah Bin Abdulaziz, deputy premier and commander of the National Guard, directed the treatment and “total management” of the twins at King Abdulaziz Medical City free of charge.
Improvement
Carina and her sister arrived with the twins in Riyadh last Jan. 22. The twins underwent initial tests prior to the operation.
The operation was carried out in 12 phases. Al Rabeeah headed the surgical team that was composed of 26 doctors.
Just three days after the operation that separated them, Princess Ann and Princess May showed remarkable improvement as their artificial respirators were taken off.
They were able to move their extremities normally and their vital organs such as the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys returned to normal.
Officials from the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia visited the twins after the operation. AAG
