Drugs plaints stem from drive against narcs

LAPU-LAPU City Police Chief Louie Oppus believes that the complaint linking him to the illegal drug trade could be the handiwork of disgruntled individuals affected by the city police’s heightened anti-crime operations.

This after Oppus found out that the complainant’s name is not among the list of residents in the Comelec office or the Local Registrar’s Office.

The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Police Affairs, through the PNP Regional office (PRO) 7, earlier asked Oppus to answer the allegation of Benedicto Igot, of Sitio Calubian, Barangay Marigondon.

Denial

Igot alleged that Oppus is involved in the illegal drugs in the area.

The police chief denied the allegations. He said the letter-complaint was meant to destroy his reputation and to discourage him in his anti-drug campaign.

Oppus is now drafting his answer to the complaints. He is also asking a copy of the letter-complaint.

Since Igot is not in the list of residents in the area, investigators are now trying to find out who made the letter-complaint.

They are also checking who among those arrested could be the possible complainant.

Arrests

Oppus said that since he assumed office last Dec. 1, he already arrested two policemen from Bohol and a Philippine Air Force official for carrying guns without the required Comelec gun-ban exemption.

He also ordered the arrest last Dec. 23, 2003 of a Traffic Management District 7 officer who was reportedly drunk and making trouble in one of the barangays in the city.

The officer was detained with prisoners overnight and was released the following day when the complainants refused to press charges.

Transfer

He also ordered the transfer of his two police officers outside of the city police force. The two are now under investigation for allegedly coddling drug dealers in Barangay Mactan.

The two were caught leaking information on impending raid operations on the house of suspected drug dealers in the barangay.

He said any of these uniformed men could be the culprit. He is not discounting the possibility that those he earlier charged for major criminal activities could have written the letter.

Oppus admitted he felt demoralized because he was just doing his job and the presidential adviser office listened to the complaints from persons with no clear background. OCP
