Eddie Gil gets ‘reprieve’ from SC

MANILA—Businessman Eddie Gil is back in the presidential race, for now that is, after the Supreme Court (SC) issued a status quo order in connection with an appeal he filed before the High Tribunal.

The SC en banc, which is holding its annual summer sessions in Baguio City, ordered the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to observe a status quo.

But a Comelec official said Gil is still disqualified.

“I have not seen the order yet, but if it’s a status quo order, he’s still disqualified because the status quo order refers to the situation prior to the filing of his (Gil’s) petition at the Supreme Court. We will maintain the prevailing situation,” Comelec Commissioner Florentino Tuason Jr. said.
Tuason penned the Comelec Second Division’s ruling in March to disqualify Gil, which the commission en banc subsequently adopted in April.

The SC’s ruling, dated April 13, and signed by Clerk of Court Luzviminda D. Puno, said the order was issued without necessarily “giving due course” to the appeal filed by Gil.

Parties in the case were given five days to file a comment.

Aside from the Comelec, also named respondents were Honesto Isleta, Napoleon Galit and Eduardo Morada, who initiated the disqualification case against Gil before the Comelec.

Gil, who is running under the Isang Bansa, Isang Diwa party, filed an appeal of the Comelec’s decision before the SC.

The Comelec ruled last March 15 to disqualify Gil from the presidential race for being a nuisance candidate and for being financially incapable of waging a nationwide campaign.

Interviewed live on ABS-CBN after the High Court’s order was revealed, Gil said he was raring to campaign again on his “vision and mission to free the Filipinos from the bondage of poverty.” (Sunnex Luzon)
