Cebuano bowlers ‘outdid themselves’
THEY came home empty-handed. But by just competing, they have earned so much.
So explained Elvis Lee, team manager of the Cebuano delegation to the 7th Asian Schools Bowling Championship in Hong Kong.
Although it’s the first time the Philippine team came home empty-handed, Lee was very impressed with the statistics of his players from Cebu.
“If you compare their average (scores in Hong Kong) to their scores here in Cebu, you will know they played very well there. In fact, they all played above their average; the other countries just played better,” Lee said.
Best performer
The Philippine Bowling Congress has yet to issue any comment on the Philippine team’s performance, but observers noted that it will have to give more support to the young players, who will be the country’s future flag carriers in international events. This especially after the medal shutout in Hong Kong.
Amid the Philippine contingent’s slump, 13-year-old Kim Lao came out the most impressive among the 10 Cebuanos who competed in Hong Kong, finishing fifth in the Masters Event.
With five more years to go before she goes over the 18-year-old age limit of the competition, Lao could eventually dominate the event in the years to come, especially now that most of the top guns are no eligible in the next year or two, including Malaysian Girls’ champion Zandra Aziela, who is already 18-years-old and will compete in her final Asian Schools meet next year.
Distraction
“I felt intimidated in the Masters Event because I was on the same lane with Zandra and she was really good. I think in Game 5, I started to lose my focus,” shared the shy teener, who scored a 148 in Game 5, the second-lowest score in the event.
However, she did recover in the final three game, which she partly credits to the support of the rest of the Philippine team members, including players from Manila. However, being the only qualifier among the Filipinos, she felt alone during the Masters showdown.
“It’s sad that when you look around (among the qualifiers), you don’t have anybody wearing the same uniform with you. But nonetheless I’m happy I qualified in the Masters,” said Lao.
