Tampus loses crown By Rommel C. Manlosa Sun.Star Staff Reporter
MARVIN Tampus has grown too big for his own good.
The young fighter of the emerging Stonewall Boxing Club breached the 108-pound boundary during the weigh-in session, and then burned himself out trying to scale down to the weight limit.
He then paid the price Tuesday night when the Pan-Asian Boxing Association (Paba) light-flyweight champion succumbed to the cat-quick and well-prepared Indonesian challenger Vicky Tahumil by unanimous decision at the RCTI Studio in Jakarta, Indonesia.
After 12 rounds of boxing, the scorecards read 120-109, 118-110 and 116-114 all in favor of the Indonesian challenger.
“Marvin called me up after the fight and he had no excuse. He said Tahumil really won that fight because he lost his strength and was not in top condition because he had a hard time making the 108lb limit,” said Stonewall manager Joy Ouano.
One-two combo
Fighting for the first time without his patron, Terry Carter, who is currently in the US for a medical checkup, Tampus, the WBA No.4 ranked light-flyweight contender, was not in his usual form as he fell prey to the one-two combination of the challenger to neutralize the power punches by “The Kid”.
Tahumil also eluded being tagged heavily by using his stick-and-jab strategy.
Change division
“We have no choice at this moment but to move Marvin up to the flyweight division. He is still young and growing fast, and we cannot keep him in the 108lb division because it will be tough for him to keep up with the limit,” said Ouano.
In his three previous travels to Thailand, Tampus, accompanied by Carter, who was always there to provide inspiration to the young fighter, had been successful. But Indonesia is a different story for the Bato, Leyte native, who fought to a draw with Anis Ceufin last May 23 also in Jakarta.
Tahumil, who is reportedly unbeaten, raised his fight record to 24-0-2 packed with eight KOs. He assumes the world ranking of Tampus, who dropped to 13-2-1 (9KOs).
