Comelec delays card distribution

IDENTIFICATION cards of registered voters started to arrive at the Cebu City Commission on Elections (Comelec) office yesterday but because some of them have discrepancies, they cannot be distributed to the voters yet.

Cebu City Election Officer Simaco Labata said they would have immediately delivered the IDs to the barangay halls for distribution but because of the errors, these will have to be mailed back to the Comelec central office for correction.

Brand new ones will also have to be made to replace those with photos that do not coincide with the names of the voters.

Comelec Regional Attorney Marshall Rubia said they will not be able to get back the IDs in time for the May 10 polls.

“If we were the ones authorized to correct them, we can start distributing them immediately but we are required to send them back to Manila so this will really take a few more days before we can distribute,” Labata told reporters yesterday.

Barangay officials have been tasked to distribute the ID cards to their constituents.

While Comelec would not require the voters’ ID on election day, it would be easier and faster for the poll clerks and the voters if proper identification is available.

The voters ID issued by the Comelec bears the voter’s photo, complete name, date of birth and the number of the precinct where he is registered.

The Comelec seal also appears at the back of the card.

Rubia said that aside from elections, the voters’ ID may also be required when transacting with government agencies, including application for visa with different embassies. LCR
