Nadera, Mariano log upset victories
CEBUANO International Master moved closer to his first GM norm after his second-round upset win in the 6th Dubai Open Chess Championship in the United Arab Emirates.
The 58th-seed Nadera (Elo 2390) defeated 22nd ranked GM Zahar Efimenko (Elo 2566) of Ukraine to take the second of his required 5.5 points for his first GM norm.
He will next face 15th-seed GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly (Elo 2582), who defeated IM Konstantine Shanava (Elo 2428) in the second round.
Nadera’s fellow IM Nelson Mariano II (Elo 2416), ranked 53rd in the 134-player field, also pulled a surprise win over 19th-seed GM Anton Korobov (Elo 2751) for his second straight win.
On the other hand, GM Bong Villamayor (Elo 2469) lost against ninth-seed super-GM Pentayla Harikrishna (Elo 2599), while Woman IM Cristine Rose Mariano (Elo 2084) also dropped her second-round match against Fide Master Hatim Al Hadarani (Elo 2356).
The top-seed in the annual event, which has attracted 45 GMs all over the world, super-GM Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu (Elo 2692), also kept his clean slate after turning back IM Tahir Vakhidov (Elo 2517) to share the lead with 21 others.
A total of $40,000 is at stake in the event with $5,000 going to the champion. ML
