Cebu-based squads dominate
By KARLON N. RAMA

SHOOTERS from Cebu-based guns clubs made quick work of their opponents in the practical shooting match last Sunday, dominating three of the four divisions in the competition that has been considered as the province’s first big match of the year.

Over a hundred guns saw action in the 10-stage event that featured four classifier stages and drew shooters from Baybay, Ormoc and Tacloban, Leyte, Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, and Koronadal City, South Cotabato.

Range Master Nonilo Poliquit, in an interview, declared the games a success despite hitches that he did not elaborate.

Shooters Roger Yu of the host Cebu Pistol and Rifle Association (CPRA), Yogi Javier, representing Gold Cup Gun Club, and Lito Ladroma, shooting for the Casey Gun Club in Lapu-Lapu, made it an all-Cebu win in the heated Standard division.

Standard division

Chris Panes, shooting for the Cebu City Police Office, Jimmy Yu, representing Gold Cup, and William Torrefiel, representing Front Sight Gun Club, also executed a clean sweep of their own in the Standard division revolver category.

CPRA shooters Brian Yu, Dino Cinco and Alex Jo did the same in the Open division, while Ric Bono, shooting for Casey, copped the gold in the Modified division.

9-mm only

Ormoc Gun Club and the Philippine Team’s Danny Torrevillas, however, broke free from the slump that captured almost everybody else, putting down all other contenders in the 9mm-only Production division.

Trying to launch a comeback after a lackluster run during the Dec. 2003 Mayor Boying Cari Cup in Baybay, Leyte, Torrevillas ran full speed and left everybody behind, including top-contender Dino Ang, who out-gunned Torrevillas senseless during the Cari Cup.

Ang, also of the Philippine Team, landed a distant second, followed by Front Sight’s Gil Limosnero.
