Paragua tames Bitoon
PUERTO Princesa City, Palawan – Southeast Asian Games triple-gold medalist athlete International Master Mark Paragua scored a crucial victory for Bulacan A chess team as his team salvaged a 2-2 standoff against Palawan-Philippine Navy to grab the leadership of the 2004 National Inter-Provincial Chess Team Championships at the Provincial Capitol Building.
Paragua beat Cebuano IM Richard Bitoon in the top board to make up for losses in the second and third boards.
“Suwerte lamang po kasi nag-blunder si kuya Richard (I got lucky when he blundered). He could have held the game with a pawn move to f6 and not his king to h6,” said Paragua, the country’s top-rated player with an Elo rating of 2529.
The 19-year-old Paragua, who will represent the Asian 3.2a zone in the Fide Men’s World Chess Championships, employed the Rosolimo variation against Bitoon’s Sicilian defense to win in 32 moves.
Bulacan A’s board-four player Julius Joseph De Ramos whipped Navy man Marlon Ricafort in 51 moves of a French Defense, while National Master Jerry Nodado and Roland Salvador scored the twin wins for Palawan-Philippine Navy. Nodado upset IM Ronald Dableo, who will join Paragua in the World Championships, in 32 pushes of a Caro Kann Defense, while Salvador beat Noel Dela Cruz in a Sicilian skirmish.
Tied for second to fourth are Palawan-Philippine Navy, the GM Rogelio Antonio-led Cavite-Tagaytay City and Bulacan B (UP Dream Team) headed by IM Ronald Bancod.
