A tribute to a mother
By Karen May L. Oreiro

Before anything, he is a mother's son. Karen May L. Oreiro catches Alvin at a campaign break to pay tribute to mom.

May is a festive and colorful month. It’s summer, when people go on vacations, to summer camps, or resorts by the sea. It’s a time for fiestas, Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan.

But this year, two major events will happen in the month of May -Mother’s Day, which we celebrate today and the National Elections which takes place tomorrow.

Despite the hassle, hurry and the worry of the elections, we cannot fail to celebrate motherhood and honor our mothers.

More important than our right to vote, are our mothers. We elect our public officials and they serve us a few years, after their term, they become private citizens while our mothers mold us to become real people and they’re always there. They never leave.

“Life takes surprising turns. The only sure thing in this world is that we are the children of our mothers and they are always there to give us support when we need it,” former mayor Alvin Garcia speaks of why people should dedicate a day especially for mothers.

Despite his hectic schedule, he plans to visit his mother and take her to dinner on Mother’s Day.

Throughout history, mothers have been applauded for their ability to perform many different roles.

But for the former mayor, his mother, Ever Biaño Garcia, is best taking the role of disciplinarian in the family.

“She was a teacher all her life and she taught us a lot of things including the values that we now hold, values extolling education, honesty and integrity,” Garcia said. He insists that mothers should play a significant role in character building.

He says that the best thing he ever learned from his mother is the value of orderliness.

“There’s a place for everything and everything should be in its place. My mother used to say that.”

The value of orderliness has helped him to shape up his career as a lawyer.

This sense of orderliness is also what helped define Garcia’s devotion to public service. He sought to render to the community what he nurtures at home.

For indeed, gifted with these values, in what better way can you show your gratitude but through service?

Garcia’s years of service is a tribute to the mother who fashioned his life.

All of us search for people that we look up to, and for former mayor Alvin Garcia, it’s his mother.

“I am not as orderly as her. Nobody can approximate my mother. But relatively, I’m more orderly compared to other men who don’t have a mother like the one I have. She is my model.”

Like the saying that goes--”If you want to know who the real heroes are, look at the mothers.”
