150 nominated for Heroes for Health

Over 150 men and women from all over the country were nominated for the Heroes for Health Award, a joint project of Pfizer and the Department of Health (DOH).

It aims to honor and assist five individuals involved in projects to help improve the health and quality of life of Filipinos especially the poor and underserved sectors of society. The Heroes for Health Award is the first such award which is open to both health and non-health professionals.

Nominations came from all over the country, from as far north as Kalinga Apayao, Ilocos and the Cordillera Autonomous Region and as far south as Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, and Lanao. The ages of the nominees ranged from their 20’s to their 90’s.

While many were health professionals – doctors, nurses, midwives – there were also others from the private sector (NGOs and foundations) and the government, an indication that many ordinary citizens are doing something beyond the call of duty for the health and welfare of their fellow Filipinos.

Projects

The projects of the nominees ranged from community healthcare, disease control and management, philanthropic work, capacity building, advocacy and education, with all relating to health in one way or the other.

Initial evaluation and screening of the nominees is now taking place to bring down the number of qualified nominees to 30. Another screening will be held before the end of the month to select the 10 finalists who will be visited and validated in June.

The whole selection process for the Heroes for Health Award, from nomination to final judging, is being observed and monitored by Joaquin Cunanan and Co. to ensure complete transparency and integrity in the process.

A distinguished board of judges coming from the different sectors of society will select the five Heroes for Health in July. The awarding ceremonies will take place during Pfizer’s anniversary celebration in August.
