Danao Sports leads

CARCAR, Cebu—A flat tire hampered the bid of the Minglanilla Off Road Bikers Association to rule the 158-kilometer Moalboal-to-Carcar leg of the Smart Audionet Amazing Tour of Cebu 2004.

On the other hand, the Tour ng Pilipinas veteran Robert Villaber bannered Rambo Inc.-Danao Telecom took today’s leg with a 4:39 advantage over second- placer Danao Sports Commission.

“What a waste, we were ahead of Rambo but when we reached Dalaguete, we got a flat tire,” a member of the team’s support staff told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday after they crossed the finish line seventh at the Carcar Municipal Hall in the Amazing Category.

The team took the lead after another rolling start from Moalboal to Badian, where they had to trek to the Kawasan falls and back and held the pole position until the unfortunate incident in Dalaguete.

The flat tire allowed Rambo to take the lead, and was a minute and six seconds ahead of DSC and COG, who were at joint second at the CPELCO control point, where they were to go on foot to the finish line six kilometers away.

The two Danao teams’ rigid yearlong training allowed them to take the momentum away from COG, with Rambo staying on the lead and DSC overtaking COG two kilometers into the run.

Their win cut the lead of DSC, which is led by Marites Bitbit, to less than nine minutes as the teams start the final leg today from Carcar to the race’s finish in JY square.

“Our goal today (yesterday) is to protect the lead,” DSC team manager Oscar Rodriguez said before yesterday’s start.

On the other hand, Team Cebu City, bannered by Noigie Biagan, Mylene Jarina, Lloyd Debalucos and Macdonnie Ylaya, finished the third leg at sixth place, 0:24:54 behind the leaders.

Meanwhile, the Allied Mountaineers Trekkers and Adventurers again ruled the Adventure Category for the second straight day with the Danao Bikers Club at a close second, five minutes behind Amta.

The two will be battling for the top purse today when the Smart Audionet Amazing Race 2004 enters its final day.
