Epson Phils. puts up laboratory in Cebu for software development

DIGITAL imaging solutions company Epson Philippines Corp. has announced that its mother company, Seiko Epson Corp., through its subsidiary Epson Software Development Laboratory Inc., has established a new software development laboratory in Cebu.

The new lab, located at the Asiatown Information Technology Park, opened for business last April, a statement said.

Epson Software Development Laboratory is strengthening its global software development to meet growing internal software demand, reduce costs and speed up the development cycle.

The new lab will draw on the Philippines’ large pool of English-speaking engineering talent to develop and design software independently or jointly with local software vendors, Epson Philippines said.

Part of Epson’s “Global Brain Network” concept, the new lab is geared to quickly develop the best software in the most ideal location.

Epson Software Development Laboratory operates software development labs in six locations in Japan and two locations overseas, one in Canada and the other in China. The company also has on-site software developers at Epson Research and Development Inc. in the United States, and at other major Epson research and development centers.

The company’s mission is to develop high-quality software at low costs by hiring talented software engineers from the Philippines’ large pool of college graduates and by taking advantage of preferential tax systems, such as those offered by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority, it said.

The new lab expects to grow to 50 people over the next three years. Filipino engineers who have completed training in Japan and newly hired Filipino employees are part of the lab’s core staff of 20.

Epson is introducing a variety of imaging devices into the market to achieve its goal of achieving “Digital Image Innovation.” By building a strong software development arm for these devices, Epson will further enhance its intercon-nectivity in line with new market needs.

The laboratory is an arm of Epson Precision (Philippines) Inc., an Epson Group company that manufactures inkjet printers and quartz crystal devices.
